Expecting another standard student cookbook, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened From Pasta to Pancakes: The Ultimate Student Cookbook by the ambitious and impressive 23-year-old chef, Tiffany Goodall. In fact I was positively thrilled.
Jam-packed with recipes themed around the student lifestyle, From Pasta to Pancakes includes dishes for ‘Wasted Weekends’, ‘House Parties’ and ‘Healthy Days for the Girls’. Goodall provides not only a basic culinary guide, but suggests different and exciting versions of many of the classics. Take the humble jacket potato. Yes, the book does offer step-by-step instructions for making a jacket potato – hardly rocket science, even for those studying rocket science – but it also offers variations on a theme, with instructions for ham and cheese stuffed potato and the student staple, jacket potato with beans and cheese.
Each recipe includes serving suggestions as well as advice for leftovers, and, like all student endeavours, there’s a bit of booze hidden away in there as well. The vodka watermelon is an innovative party drink, and there are an abundance of curries with which to counteract the alcohol if necessary.
Best of all though, is the book’s format. Evidently not content with reinventing student cuisine, From Pasta to Pancakes reinvents the student cookbook. Laid out in comic-strip style, complete with speech bubbles, the recipes are easy to follow and humorous instead of patronizing. Goodall’s style is simple and efficient, packing instructions onto each page, but keeping the recipes photo-based, for clear, uncomplicated reading.
From Pasta to Pancakes has it all: a catchy title, manageable dimensions (perfect for holding in one hand while the other stirs a bubbling pot of baked beans), a straightforward format and an engaging tone. Best of all, it is full of good food. The recipes are easy enough for the most incompetent student chef, but they work equally well for anyone else looking to cook a well-balanced meal that is simple and tasty. |
