A Winter Warmer - Kumkani Lanner Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2007 Taste Test
Review by Alexander Walters
With the rapid onset of winter flaying commuters' cheeks across the land,
you might be forgiven for fancying a little taste of summer after work.
Memories of a drink on the patio or a glass of wine outside the pub are
fast-fading - rare as they were in this summer's washout.
So it is now that we turn up the central heating, put another log on the
fire, and rummage around for a bottle of something decent to drink. Winter
is traditionally a time for big, serious reds that warm the soul as well as
the tongue, but the Lanner Hill Sauvignon Blanc might just offer an
alternative.
With crisp, intense flavours that light up the palate and a
warm, syrupy after-taste in the throat, this white is a genuine alternative
to a red with beef or lamb. At 14.5% it's also no lightweight, and has a
deep, rich, full-bodied texture that requires slow, savouring sips to get
the most out of its character. It's one to pair with a serious meal or to
enjoy in small doses in front of the fire. It's also delicious with a bit of
extra mature cheddar and crackers, or some strong, flavoursome Stilton.
As a full-bodied white it doesn't need to be ice cold (a common mistake with
most whites), and is best served at between 8 and 10 degrees. It should
require only 45 minutes in the door of the fridge to be ready to drink.
At £11.99 this is no recession buster, but as an after-work treat or an
accompaniment to a meal, it's a real winner.
