Wold Top Ale taste test
Review by Alex Walters
As we approach Christmas with ever-increasing trepidation about January's
credit card bill, our country's pubs are beginning to feel the pinch. Duty
has risen on alcohol, staying in is proclaimed as 'the new' going out, and
the weather makes the arctic look like a sweet deal. At least the hardened
real ale drinker, his beard insulation against the cold, strides out into
the darkness seeking only the reassuring lights of his local boozer.
If, like him, you enjoy decent ale, but don't fancy his company, then why
not stay at home this Christmas with a couple of bottles from the Wold Top
Brewery range. Wold Top, a Yorkshire micro-brewery, produces a wide range of
beers to suit every occasion. Of particular interest at this time of year is
the Mars Magic Premium Ale, a rich, aromatic beer with a dark red hue
inspired by the "Red Planet" itself.
The beer is a smooth, crisp pint with none of the overpowering flavours of
some dark ales. It is made with crystal malt, "Progress" hops, and a hint of
roast barley, giving it a flavour of caramel on the tongue. At 4.6% is has
good depth without being overly strong, meaning you can enjoy a couple
before it begins to fatigue the taste buds. The beer leaves you with a warm,
satisfied feeling and a pleasant aftertaste; it is quite possibly the
perfect Christmas Eve pint.
If darker ale isn't your thing, then Wold Top offers a wide selection of
other beers, including their flagship Wold Top Bitter, which is highly
recommended. Less exciting, however, was the Wold Gold light beer, which had
all the depth, mystery and flavour of a bottle of Budweiser, but you can't
win them all.
